Footnotes to Long Island History
Tradition Started Back in 1833:
Area Menfolk Gather for Eel
Chowder
by
Thomas R. Bayles
Early Diners:
This group of men in a
scene from yesteryear enjoyed the same eel chowder dinner as did today's
members of the Hunters Garden Association when they met last Thursday at
Brewster's Lot, located off a dirt road some two miles west of the
Riverhead – Moriches Road. Though clothing styles may have changed a
bit, since 1890, when this picture was taken, the menu remains the same
and the dinner is cooked in the same pots used 100 years ago.
