List of people in Brookhaven Town who agreed to set their slaves free (The Act of 1788) This list also includes the names of the slaves set free.

Slavery in Brookhaven Town

Under Act of Feb. 27, 1788 slave owners wishing to set free slaves are required to obtain licenses from trustees and justices, which are granted on evidence of the negroes being under fifty years of age, and capable of providing for themselves.  The following list, gathered from the certificates registered at different times upon the town books will suggest something of the extent to which slavery existed at that time.
