Dear Parents and Residents,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!
From the kindergarten student beginning their K-12 educational journey to the high school senior looking toward graduation, this is an exciting time for our entire community. As always, we look forward to building on the traditions and achievements that make our community proud.
Through the support of our dedicated Board of Education, building principals, assistant principals, directors, teachers and staff, our District has turned the corner on our students’ academic performance. This year, our focus will be to continue the momentum of the District’s success.
Student achievement at the local, regional and national level continues to climb and reach new heights. The higher standards are producing higher quality thinking and communication skills as our students prepare for life in our global communities.
We are extremely proud of our graduating Class of 2016 who earned in excess of $15 million in scholarships and will attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country this fall. Additionally, our graduation rate has reached 97%, our highest level to date!
We have seen significant increases in the results of New York State testing with 97% of our students passing the ELA Comprehensive Regents Examination. Common Core Algebra I and Common Core Algebra II test results continue to increase with a 74% and 87% passing rate, respectively.
Of course, standardized testing and scores alone can’t document all of our exciting achievements. Over the past 15 years, we have implemented many new initiatives and programs that present impressive results.
To help assess the instructional needs of students, the District has implemented i-Ready Diagnostic and Instruction Technology. The program helps assess students’ instructional needs while monitoring their academic progress though the school year.
Our K-12 Student Success Initiative has been tremendously beneficial in providing both academic and emotional support for our students on an individual basis.
In support of our community, the Middle Island Teacher’s Association held two very successful book giveaways in December 2015 and May 2016. More than 40,000 books were distributed to families and educators.
Community involvement and support remains critical moving forward. As the new school year begins, please remember that one of the most meaningful factors in assisting students to have a successful school experience is our ongoing partnerships with parents and guardians. To help your child attain their goals, volunteer at their school and reinforce the importance of school attendance. Stay involved by attending school board meetings, conferences and PTA meetings.
We have an exciting academic year ahead of us and I wish our students and families all the best. Please enjoy the remainder of the summer and look forward to seeing you in September.
