High School Senior Designs “Letters for Jacob”

A sick child's request from Maine made its way to Longwood High School, and one class decided to take action.

Nine-year-old Jacob Thompson was undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer and requested that people from around the world send Christmas cards and letters.

As a sign of compassion and support, the students in Ilene Rubenstein’s High School English class wrote Jacob 46 letters and assembled a scrapbook which was delivered to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital where Jacob was undergoing treatment.

“We wanted to make Jacob as happy as possible, and let him know that there are people out there that care about him,” said senior Gina Parlato.

After learning of Jacob’s tragic passing this past November, Gina created a holiday ornament to raise money in Jacob’s memory.  Through the support of the Longwood High School Best Buddies Club, staff and students, more than $450 was raised and donated to the Children’s Oncology Unit at The Barbara Bush Hospital.
Gina is a talented artist who has completed numerous art projects throughout the halls of the high school.

“The holidays are for good deeds,” explained Gina.  “Even though Jacob has passed away, I felt that it was important to do something in his memory.”
