The New York State Education Department (NYSED) released their report on protocols and guidance required to reopen schools, including in-person with social distancing, hybrid of distance learning and in-person, and distance learning.

The Longwood Reopening Task Force comprised of staff, parents, students, and community members together with Central Administration, and our Board of Education will submit the plan based on the three scenarios, on or before the July 31 deadline. During the week of August 1-7, the Governor will decide if the schools will reopen. His decision will be based on the daily infection rate remaining below five-percent using a 14-day average. If the infection rate reaches above nine-percent using a 7-day average, schools may again close.

The complete report from the NYSED is available here.

High School Athletic Season Update: The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced that the start of the fall high school athletic season is postponed until September 21, 2020. Additionally, the State and Regional Championships have been canceled. If school sports remain prohibited throughout 2020, NYSPHSAA is preparing to implement a condensed schedule beginning January 2021 for the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons.

Under Superintendent Dr. Lonergan’s direction, the District has created a task force, comprised of board members, central administration, principals, teachers, other instructional and non-instructional school-based staff, parents, students, and community members, to plan for the reopening of schools in September 2020.

The group has taken an in-depth look at several areas such as school operations including the distribution of meals, transportation, regular disinfecting procedures, adherence to social distancing guidelines, the implementation of precautionary measures, and instructional considerations such as scheduling and extended learning time.

This web page will serve as a hub for updates related to the reopening of our schools. The situation surrounding COVID-19 is evolving with time. We will regularly update this page as our plans continue to take shape.

As we plan for the start of the 2020-21 school year, we are committed to keeping our families, staff, students, and community members informed. While there are still many uncertainties regarding what the upcoming school year will look like, we are hard at work to ensure our students have access to a high-quality educational experience.

We know that the question at the top of our families’ minds is whether students will return to the classroom for in-person instruction at the start of the upcoming school year. While we wait for guidelines and protocols from the Governor’s office and the New York State Education Department, we have planned accordingly for several reopening options. At this time, the three scenarios below are simply options and not the actual plans for the fall.

Scenario One – In-Person with Social Distancing*: We welcome back all students into our buildings and resume a mostly regular school day schedule. This scenario would involve enhanced cleaning protocols, a degree of physical distancing among students, adjustments to how students enter and exit buildings, and how we manage transitions between classrooms throughout the day.
*In support of Scenario One, the current social distancing guidelines will need to be modified by New York State to be viable. We are hopeful that the Governor will update the current social distancing protocols to accommodate all students back to our classrooms.

Scenario Two-Hybrid of Distance Learning and In-Person: Students would spend half their time in school and the other half engaged in distance learning. This scenario would also involve enhanced cleaning protocols, physical distancing, adjustments to how students enter and exit buildings, and transitions between classrooms.

Scenario Three – Distance Learning: It remains a possibility that we will need to start the 2020-21 school year with students engaged in distance learning, similar to the final few months of the previous school year.

During these uncertain times, we ask that parents and guardians begin to plan for additional childcare options. While we hope that we will welcome all students back in September, we want families prepared for the possibility that continuation of distance learning may continue via an executive order from the Governor.

We greatly appreciate your support and collaborative efforts to ensure the Longwood community’s health and education.  Please check back often for information and updates.
